FAUMC Coronavirus Mitigation Plan

Updated: 4/20/2020

Overview

Francis Asbury UMC recognizes the seriousness of the potential impacts of the coronavirus on the health and well-being of our congregation. Our primary responsibility is to do all that we can to mitigate the virus while continuing to offer opportunities to practice our faith as a Christian community. As we witness the changes required in our daily routines in order to slow the spread of the disease, it is normal to experience some level of stress, anxiety, and frustration. It is more important than ever to remember that we are not alone. We are all in this together and the promise is that God is with us in every circumstance of life.

“Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every situation. The Lord be with all of you.”                   2 Thessalonians 3:16  (NIV)

Prayer

We especially pray for one another during this time of pandemic and especially pray for those infected, healthcare professionals who offer care and seek a vaccine for Covid-19, our national, state and local leaders, and for the corporate businesses who provide much needed supplies.  As we support and care for one another, our best care is to practice all safety measures to limit the spread of the virus.

Church Facilities & Building Maintenance

Our church building is closed until further notice. With the exception of those who are carrying out essential functions (e.g., Sunday worship team, mail, contributions, cleaning, etc.), no one should be in the church buildings.  To reduce the spread of the corona virus, the church building has been thoroughly cleaned by our cleaning service and was sanitized (door knobs, light switches, panic hardware, bathroom fixtures, etc.) on 03/30/2020.

Communication

As we are under a “shelter at home” order here in Virginia, our primarily church communicate is through our weekly FAUMC emails, our church website, and Facebook. Our ministry is ongoing and is being conducted largely through these modes of communication.  Additionally, people are encouraged to stay connected and hold meetings via Zoom Video conferencing and other web-based services such as Google meeting, Facetime, etc.

Worship Services

Sunday morning worship is important to us all and is the primary gathering of our family of faith.  Especially during this time, it is our dominant ability to all stay connected and be strengthened by praise, prayer, the Word of God and the morning messages.  We are live streaming Sunday Worship on Facebook Live.  Our service is also available on the church website and may also be viewed at a later time. We encourage everyone to stay connected individually and with their connection groups such as Bible Studies, Women’s Circles, and special events.

Church Staff

Our Church Staff is working off site from their homes and are available by email or telephone.  We will continue to pay our church staff during this crisis.  As a result of the recent resignation of our Modern Worship Leader, Communications Director and Director of Youth Ministry, our salary expenses are somewhat reduced.

Francis Asbury Preschool

Our Church Preschool is now out for the remainder of the year.  Our Preschool staff and teachers will continue to be paid as per their contracts and it appears that we will have the ability to do so.  Our teachers are continuing to provide resources and lessons to our preschool children via the internet and video conferencing.

Paycheck Protection Program Loan

FAUMC has received a non-recourse forgivable loan from the Cares Act “Paycheck Protection Program”!  God is good!!  We applied through Towne Bank and these monies are a loan to be used for the purposes of paying the payroll, mortgage interest and utilities of our Church and FA Preschool. FAUMC and Preschool have continued to carry our staff and payroll during this time of pandemic and financial challenge.   It has been our desire not to furlough any of our employees who have served our church well and whose families count on their salaries especially now.  This loan will allow us to maintain our staff and meet our ministry and facility needs while borrowing funds at an incredibly low rate of 1%.  Even better is the fact that the loan may be eligible to be converted to a grant and be completely forgiven!

Construction

Currently, construction on our new building is proceeding as planned. We continue to regularly meet with our general contractor.  We will advise you if construction is halted due to the virus.

Church Finances

With the disruption in our Sunday worship services, our giving has been impacted. Please remember that so many of our ministries are ongoing and we are helping those in need with shelter, rental assistance and food.  In addition, we do have ongoing expenses associated with utilities, building maintenance, and payroll.

We are encouraging people to give online and are seeking to keep the need and opportunities to support our church financially before the congregation.
